But all that doesn't matter now, as I sit here in my room. No, nothing really seems to matter all too much at this moment, and a wave of relaxation washes over me.

Life is slow, and the change is much appreciated.

Kyle is off to RA training camp. Shawn, Jesse and Rob D. are in Ontario somewhere. Allie just crawled out of bed. And I have no clue where Viviane is right now.

So now, all that's left to say is: Thank you.

Thank you for coming to the shows. Thank you for reading the blogs, watching the promo videos.

Thank you for supporting us.

This summer has been an amazing, eye-opening, experience like none other. And it couldn't have been possible without all of the people who came to our shows, gave us places to stay, or just showed signs of support in your messages.

This blog is officially closed! But, before you go, drop a comment at the bottom of this message and let us know just who you all are so we can give thanks to you in person.

Much love!

Home, tired, but already itching for adventure,

Robert Tracey

"They have worries, they're counting the miles, they're thinking about where to sleep tonight, how much money for gas, the weather, how they'll get there--and all the time they'll get there anyway, you see." -Jack Kerouac 'On the Road'

The Last Stretch

Well my blogging buddies, it all comes down to this. The last three days of the festival. This Sunday at 1pm, 'Little Dickie' will come to an end, and Da B'ys, our ragtag group, will scatter to the wind.

What an experience it has been. In the long stretch of this adventure we seven began as friends and acquaintances, but after being crammed into a van and whisked away to all the corners of Canada, we have become so much closer. In the words of one famed wordsmith, Barney the Dinosaur,"We're a great big family" (Dysfunctional, albeit).

But to avoid gripping this blog into a conclusion just yet, we will stop short this entry and end with: the houses have been great, and we're having loads of fun still.

Check out the blog on Sunday, when we wrap it all up and have ourselves a little party.

My love, to the equivalent of fresh cupcakes,

Rob T.

STAR*STAR*STAR*STAR

Edmonton. Who would have thought that such a gem of a city could be found way up in Northern Alberta? Well, Robert Dawson did, and still does. Edmonton is a beautiful city with a fabulous fringe that seems to appreciate us as much as we appreciate them. The proof is in our biggest and best news to report: We are the proud recipients of a FOUR STAR review from the reputable newspaper, The Edmonton Journal. We’re pretty happy about that.

We’ve been blessed with large and responsive audiences for our first two shows, so a huge “Tanks B’ys” to those who came out to see us. An even bigger “Tanks” goes out to Jeanne and Jay, Viviane’s Newfie relatives, and to Colleen and Rene, Kyle’s Cape Breton relatives who showed us some healthy East Coast hospitality in the form of BBQ’s and kitchen parties. Banjo battles, Newfinese, and new socks: this cowboy says: “That’s the Best!”

Speaking of friends, our good Winnipeg buddy Clayton has followed us (groupie!) to hang out, have a time, and he looks like Tom Cruise. As well, we’ve seen some of our Winnipeg performer friends around and supported them whenever possible.

On Sunday, Robert’s parents Bill and Bern celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. Congratulations! A special shout-out was in order post-show, and the happily married couple shared a kiss before an (almost) sold-out crowd.

With two shows behind us, we entered our mid-fringe 3 day break. Finally time to see some shows and be tourists for a day. “Jake’s Gift” is the runaway winner for best show for Allie, Kyle, and I. A charming and patriotic story about a war vet who makes friends with a small French girl upon returning to Normandy for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day: it left Kyle as a blubbering mess. I’m so happy it exists: a beautiful way of telling an important story for all Canadians.

Today we took a trip back in time to my former workplace: Fort Edmonton Park. With a few strings pulled, Da B’ys got to see Edmonton’s best historical attraction for the biggest discount possible. They had a time, back in time, and I got to see a few familiar faces, and eat a big ice cream.

14 Shows – 10 Shows = 4 Shows (and Heaps of Good Times!) Remaining

Love, with lots of love, and love on top,

Robert Dawson

Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Cookware Isle at IKEA

It's been a little stretch through the Rockies sans internet. But we're back at it once again.

I bet you'll never guess where we are now...
Edmonton! The last leg of our journey. Just 11 more days of spectacular foolishness separate us from the journey home, battered and bruised from all of our quests. We got in a day+(day/2) ago and got to check out our new romping grounds, as well as the Catalyst Theatre. It just so happens that this particular theatre looks like a post-modern sheet metal castle... a very weird, but amazing space.

Viv and Allie are staying on the west side of town with a friend of Allie's momma, Jesse is off living with an ex-girlfriend for a couple of nights, and the rest of us are shacked up in Andria and Matt's house (the bride and groom from last blog). Overall, everything is great.

Now tonight I am moving on outwards, a couple of blocks over, to meet up and stay with a special group of people. Oh yes, the whole family is flying in, and I couldn't be more excited to see them. What's more, Sunday, our second show, falls on the same day as my parents' 30th wedding anniversary. Very fun times.

Shall we recap what has happened since last post?

We went to Banff. It was kind of lame, not going to lie. It had a thick touristy vibe about it. Then we headed off to Lake Louise (very pretty) and Jasper (my favourite). In my personal opinion, when it comes to towns in the Rockies, Jasper takes the cake, as well as the rest of the bakery. It is tiny, vibrant, not too tourist-riddled, and very friendly.

It also has more elk than people, I am sure. The campground we stayed at was teeming with them. Oh, and we got to hike another mountain, Edith Cavell. It was very pretty, but a tad on the easy side. Check out our youtube channel for a video of Jesse scatting on top of the mountain. It's pretty... unique.

Any odds, now that we have regular internet access, it shouldn't be too long before I update you all about opening night. So tune in next time for that.

All the best(est),

Rob T.

Wedding Parties and Scaling Mountains (Not in that particular order)

It's official, we have now successfully scaled our first mountain. This particular climb was called Ha Ling Peak, one of the shorter hikes in Canmore (a.k.a. Disneyland for the outdoors enthusiast).

Other than having experienced the thrill of completing the trail, as well as taking in the breathtaking view, the most important thing that da b'ys and I have taken away from this is the assurance that, no matter how decrepit or overweight we become, we can always say "Yeah, well I climbed a mountain. So shut up."

Canmore is a jewel. Life up here, nestled in the Rockies, is so... perfect! Every time you step out the door, you get hit in the face with these towering behemoths, and you can't help but stare in awe at their raw beauty.

We arrived in town on Thursday and met up with the Dawson clan, who have all gathered here for the marriage of Robbie D's sister, Andria. We got to meet the Emmett family as well, belonging to the Groom, Matt.

What a wonderful group of people! They've shown us great hospitality and helped with a lot of our traveling woes. And, I may add, the bride and groom make a lovely couple. All the best for them and their daughter, Sadie, in the future.

I've also had the pleasure of staying with John and Carol MacLean, (John MacLean, not to be mistaken with John McClane from Die Hard), family friends of Jesse's. They are very friendly and treat us very well, providing us with delicious meals and insightful advice about wines, scotchs and the like. The other b'ys (with the exception of Robbie D) are tenting it out a little ways away, fighting bears and cougars, and the such. Kyle, for all of his time camping, has disappointingly failed thus far to bag us some delicious owl meat.

Tomorrow is our last day in Canmore before heading off for a 15 minute drive up the Icefields Parkway to Banff for a couple of nights. This town will be sorely missed by all of us. But we ain't done yet. Weather depending, we have another mountain hike planned for tomorrow, up to Lady MacDonald; twice the size of Ha Ling. Here's to hoping!

See you soon Edmonton,

Rob T.

Goodbye Winnipeg / Hello Wilderness

The Winnipeg Fringe came to a close yesterday.

Here, I insert my sad emoticon face -> :(

But do not fret! That 'open-parentheses' is set to become a 'close-parentheses' very soon. And that's because da b'ys are gettin' back to their roots this Wednesday.

'What roots?' you may ask. Well, we ain't talkin' about any homespun mumbo-jumbo here. We're talkin' waaay back in those roots. Back to the days when wheels were the 'new thing' and when it was still acceptable to beat people with sticks. Back when all of us b'ys were just select sequences of chromosomes waiting to be aligned correctly.

Yep. We're reverting back into our primitive selves and heading out into the wild. Check out more...
Da boat has been safely moored in harbor for quite a time now. But now she's gettin' all rigged up to set sail again. This time we're making like Lois and Clarke and pushing our way more westward than most Easterners dare go; we're headed to Alberta!

The Edmonton Fringe doesn't start until the 12th of August (17 days from now, for those who are still keeping count) so we are doing some 'filler' ... a.k.a. 'Adventure Time'. There will be plenty of camping, as we make our way to Canmore for the wedding of Robbie D's sister. Then up to Banff for a spell (Lucy Martin, put on your dancin' shoes). Next, up to Jasper for hiking and, hopefully, some fishing time. After that, it's a zip-line (not literally, geez) over to Edmonton for the next festival and a Tracey family reunion.

Going to be in any of these areas? Send us some textual lovin' and we'll do our best to meet up with you. I cannot promise anything, however, as Kyle has sworn the majority of his time to hunting owls.

Any odds, thanks Winnipeg! You were a good friend, but for the love of the baby Jesus stop smashing out our car windows. We are Arts students!

Much love to all we've met on this leg of the Fringe tour. We all hope to see you again in the future (CLAYTON!), especially those of you also headed off to Edmonton.

From us b'ys to you b'ys,

Robert T.

Oh, and here's a photo of Shawn and Kyle being fat at the beach:

Days 9, 10, 11, 12 & 13: Over the Hump

Over the past week so many wonderful things have happened that it would literally require a novel to necessitate it all.

Hmm... That's not a bad idea (actually, it is. But... well... y'know). Here's Little Dickie Milburn: The Novel.

Chapter 7

Morning, Day 9.

I stood at the edge of a beautiful emerald lake, water lapping at my toes with each coming wave. It was warm. Absurdly warm. And as I reached down, capturing the waves in my cupped hands, feeling it fall through my fingers and leaving only flecks of crusted earth behind, I realized what needed to be done.

In the center of the lake - nearly fifty feet from where I stood - was a towering black rock decorated in the strangest red weeds I had ever seen. With the wind they would sway, dancing like tiny flames that lit the darkening sky and reflected into the emerald water, setting it on fire. I removed my long silk robe and began walking towards it. First up to my ankles, feeling the warm water hum and pick at my skin. Every wave felt like the water crawling farther up my body, until it passed over my knees, my waist, above my head.

I swam. Always forward, towards the blazing black rock. And, although I had been sure it was only 50 feet away before, it now seemed like miles - and I had been swimming for days.

Then, out of the darkness of the water came a noise: 'POP'. It stopped. Then, another: 'POP. POP'. It kept coming back, faster and more menacing than before: 'POP. POP POP. POP POP POP.'

The noise was overwhelming me, dragging me to the bottom of the lake. And, as I felt the last breath of air pass through my lungs, I finally realized what this noise had been.

Kyle was eating his damn pop rocks again.

- And that's how I woke up.

-----------------

There's a little sample of the forthcoming novel. I hope it really captures the, um, 'essence' of what we're trying to go for here.

But no, really b'ys. Everything is going great. We've seen a ridiculous amount of theatre, met an even more ridiculous amount of people, and had the most ridiculous time. Our nightly haunt, the King's Head Pub (The 'Golden Lion' of the West), is a great outlet for meeting some of the most quirky, ridiculous, and downright awesome people from this province and elsewhere. Just the other day, we met Bob, who was the self-proclaimed '4th Best Eagle Drawer' in North America. Big words, but his artwork (which he gave to us at a good rate, a.k.a. Kyle paid for it all) really stands the test of time, and shows off some badass eagle/wolf skills. If you run into us anytime, ask to check it out; it will blow your mind!

Other notably cool people are:

-Clayton, assistant coordinator himself, who is always up for havin' a time. He's been sporting one of our orange tuques since day one, and he's always around to share a laugh.

-Anthony and Cheryl are deadly people. They were even so nice as to give us a ride home last night, being as sweet as they are.

-Laura, our techie, is awesome too. We went out for Dim Sum the other day (Allie loved it. I was just amused by the chicken feet we were eating).

-There's also Jay, who I think is Samoan, but I'm not sure because he has the incredible ability to do any accent in order to impress girls. Good on ya, Jay, and thanks for the drink.

-General Taylor and the whole pub crew are worthy of a laugh at any time. Nicest staff you'll ever meet.

-And, of course, the door lady Gin, whom Robbie D. has fallen madly in love with (but keep that between us). What a sweetheart.

We've become well-known about town for our fluorescent orange tuques. You can actually pick us out from approx. 7 blocks away, they stand out that much. We've also become known as the friendly people, which is great seeing as it was our intention to exhibit some east coast manners.

Anyways, that's all for now. We're all taking off back downtown to get some more promotion on the go. It's a beautiful day out, and we are going to monopolize it by going out to meet even more new people. Pleasure typin' for ya!

All my lovin',

Rob T.

Days 5, 6, 7 & 8: Journey to The Centre of the Country

What an adventure we've had already. B'ys oh b'ys, I tells ya, things are some good.

At 6 AM sharp on the 11th, we jumped in Da Boat and set sails for Winnipeg. It seemed like we drove forever through Northern Ontario but the hilliness and multitude of trees was welcomed. Accompanied by a soundtrack consisting of a lot of Canadian Indie Rock with an unusual amount of banjo and some Beethoven for good measure, we motored through the Canadian Wilderness vowing that if we ran into a moose, we would hunt it and make a delicious meal.

Around the time we got to Sault St. Marie, Da Boat began to rock and weird noises emerged from its chassis. We stopped for the night at a Motel and discovered the next morning that the sounds were nothing more than a loose lug nut. With our newly-tightened lug nut and no fear of the tire departing from our trusty vehicle, we embarked once again through the Canadian wilderness.

One of the nicest little places we encountered was Wa Wa. Upon entering the town, we were astonished to discover it was being held hostage by several giant geese:

We scoured the town for postcards and met some nice people, stuffed mooses, and bears. We restocked on beef jerky and I bought some Pop Rocks and times were good.

Due to our late departure from Sault St. Marie, we drove until 3:00, then settled down for a 3 hour nap in Da Boat. At 6:00, I determined (since we had come to the realization that Manitoba does actually exist) that I would celebrate our arrival and discovery with some Pop Rocks. The popping in my mouth was so loud it awoke Robby T. who immediately began laughing.

An hour or so later, we had arrived in Winnipeg. Since we've been here, we have encountered many friendly people and it can be said that the "Friendly Manitoba" slogan on their license plate is far from false advertising.

Last night, we had a time at the King's Head Pub, the hang-out place for all of Winnipeg's Fringers. Mayhem ensued and we had a blast meeting with the lovely folks at the pub. When we were leaving the bar, a torrential downpour had pulled a sneak-attack on us and because no one wanted to go get the van in the rain all alone during the craziest lightningy thundery storm ever, we all ran together, soaked to the bone and laughing wildly at the fun of it all.

The storm quickly took on a whole new attitude as we realized the van window had been busted and Shawn and Robert's laptops had run off to brave the storm. But alas, Rob has already purchased a new laptop and the city is still wonderful. Nestled into the abode of Shawn's Uncle, we are now ready to enjoy every bit of the festival and check out some incredible plays.

As promised, here's a picture of Shawn packing the Thule:

We made a new promo video. Check it out Here.

Opening night is tomorrow at 5:00!

Cheers,

Kyle and Da B'ys

Day 3 & 4: To the End of the World!

Seems we missed a blog last night.

But you can’t blame us for that one; it was the 2-4 birthday of the Golden Lion Pub here in Lenny-land. And, well... to be truly honest with yous all... we got a little saucy just then too. But with good reason! (story on that later in the post).

SO right now we are in the midst of a little sausage fest. Allie, the SM, is off in Montreal with her ‘sexy-pants man’ Ben, havin’ a time at the warped tour. Viv, the other half of our double-x chromosome representation, is meeting us up in Winnipeg. That means that, much to her chagrin, she’ll be missing all the pancake action on the first leg of the adventure.

I know, you’re thinkin’. “Pancakes? What in the name of the innocent baby Jesus does he mean by pancakes?” Well, seems the beginning of the journey has taken an unintentional turn for the syrupy. Upon the recommendation of George and Jo Jo Rideout, we will be ‘Dick’-in’ off to Pancake Bay to camp out on our first night. Followed by a recommended pancake lunch at Hoito in Thunder Bay. Cheesy? Yes. Definitely. But delicious too! More here

Moments ago, Shawn broke out into tears when he realized that we are about to inch farther and farther from ‘Da Johns’. But it’s going to be OK! I consoled him right good, letting him know that we are well-equipped for havin’ a time. As we head west, we are carried along by “Da Boat”, our 7-seater Grand Caravan (newly furbished with BU promos, mind you, thanks to Jock Phippen and the Recruitment crew), and the ever-useful THULE! Get ready for a deadly picture of Shawn riggin’ that THULE(!) up right good in one of the following posts. Sure, we may be a little cozy up in our rig. But as I once read in an in-flight magazine: “Treat every misadventure as a chance for un-scripted frolic”. Wise words Mr. Airplane Man.

Let’s catch you b’ys up with recent activities! Friday we did run-throughs. Lots. And. Lots. of run-throughs. One particularly memorable go resulted in an impromptu audience of 3: our deadly friend Augusta, her 10 year-old brother, and a Husky (best audience member to date). At one point in the run, when we were foolin’ around with the audience participation, all human attendees were on stage leaving this cute ole’ little husky puppy as the sole audience member. In the words of my friend Jess Melindy, “It was sooooome cute. I LUHVES it.”

Today, we got all rigged up and did a preview for an audience of 40 or so. They had a time, we had a time, and it was just good vibes all around. Then we trucked off to the quaint town of Knowlton and had a wicked time watchin’ Greg Tuck’s production of “Shakespeare’s Will”. Tis poetical, I tells you now. Congratulations go out to Mary Harvey for rippin’ through this one-woman show. What a talent she is! Get out to see it if you are in the area b’ys - I promise it won’t be regrettable.

Okay now. It’s time to head on out and finish packing up Da Boat. We are hitting the road tomorrow at 6 am. He is currently in his last year of studies at Bishop’s University working towards an honours degree in jazz bass performance. Besides pursuing music, Shawn his been involved in theatre as an actor, technical director, stage manager, and director. Raised in the quaint town of Happy Valley - Goose Bay, NL, Robert became an active member of community theatre projects at a young age. He has recently been seen as Stephano The Chimes of Freedom (a musical adaptation of The Tempest), Gary in 689 Spadina, and Lord Asriel in His Dark Materials. Although he still dabbles in acting, Robert has since turned his interests to playwriting and production management. Little Dickie Milburn marks Robert's debut as a playwright and, although he misses the east coast “some lot”, he’s very excited to see what the rest of Canada has in store.

Allison MacLeod - Stage Manager

Allison ‘Allie-Mac’ MacLeod was born and raised in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. She originally came to Bishop’s University with the intention of studying Fine Arts and Business, until she was (fortunately) enslaved by the monster that is Drama. Allison is now entering her third year as an Arts Administration major with a concentration in Drama and a minor in Fine Arts. She has been involved as an Assistant stage manager for Pride & Prejudice, Chimes of Freedom, and Twelfth of Never. Allie would like to state for the record that she “loves the ocean” and “misses it tenderly with each passing kilometer”.

____________________________________________________________________________

So that's everyone.
